There are two options when it comes to taking a Split to Hvar day trip. The first is to take the ferry and the second is to join one of the boat tours that makes a stop in Hvar.
Ferry to Hvar from Split
The cheapest way to get to Hvar from Split is by ferry. There are 3 ferry companies that offer a Split to Hvar route: TP-Line, Kapetan Luka – Krilo and Jadrolinija.
If you plan to travel in the summer, you may want to book tickets in advance via the ferry websites.
Insider Tip: There is no assigned seating on the ferries, so it is best to get there early. Most ferries also require you to be onboard 15 minutes prior to departure time.

There is plenty of things to do on the island, from exploring old town to relaxing at the beach. Below are the best 7 things to do during a day trip to Hvar Island.
1. Wander the Charming Old Town
Hvar Town is one of the main towns of Hvar Island, and it has a stunning old town. The old town features a beautiful harbor promenade, a main square, and winding streets that lead up the hill towards the fortress.
Exploring the medieval streets of Hvar Town is one of the best things to do during your Hvar day trip from Split.
The cobblestone streets and small alleyways are extremely charming and picturesque, plus there are plenty of boutique shops and restaurants.
I also highly recommend enjoying some delicious gelato while wandering around the old town.
2. Explore Fortica Fortress
Fortica Fortress is a Spanish Fortress that sits high atop a hill overlooking Hvar Town. Visiting the fortress is one of the most popular things to do on a Split to Hvar day trip.

Not only is the fortress historically significant, but from the top of it you will have gorgeous panoramic views over Hvar Town and the surrounding Pakleni Islands.
To get to the fortress you can walk up from Hvar Town, but keep in mind it is an uphill walk that typically takes around 30 min-1 hour. Another option is to take a taxi or scooter up to the top.
3. Visit St. Stephen’s Square and Cathedral
St. Stephen’s Square is the main square in Hvar Town, and is also home to the Cathedral of St. Stephen.
The cathedral was originally built on the foundations of a 6th century church. It is dedicated to St. Stephen who is known as the protector of Hvar.
However, the cathedral is best known for its renaissance-style bell tower, which is one of the best preserved bell towers in Dalmatia.
You can enter the main area of the Cathedral of St. Stephen, and this is free to visit.
4. Relax at one of Hvar’s beaches
There are several great beaches around the island of Hvar and visiting one of them is a must when on Hvar Island. There is nothing better than going swimming in the stunning crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
If you are short on time, I recommend checking out Beach Križa which is a small beach in Hvar Town. You can easily go for a quick swim here plus have plenty of time to enjoy Hvar Town and walk up to the fortress.

5. See the rest of Hvar Island
There is more to Hvar Island than just Hvar Town. In fact, Hvar is one of the larger of the Croatian islands, so there are plenty of places to visit around the island.
Hvar is known for its beautiful beaches, stunning coastline, and for its Lavender fields. One of the best ways to explore Hvar Island in one day is to rent a car and drive around the island.
There are also other towns on Hvar, including Stari Grad and Jelsa, as well as some small villages.

Along the harbor in Hvar Town, you will find some cute restaurants and bars with plenty of outdoor seating.
It’s a great place to grab lunch or enjoy a drink with a stunning view of the harbor, especially if you only have a short time in Hvar.
There are also several fun beach clubs around the island for those that have a full day in Hvar. One popular one near Hvar Town is Hula Hula Bar, which has a full beach bar, music, and sun loungers in the sand.

While there are a few locals that live on Hvar Island year-round, it really is a summer destination. This means almost all of the shops, restaurants, and attractions are only open seasonally.
