Is the Eiffel Tower Worth It? An Honest Review

During my very first trip to Paris, I went up the Eiffel Tower and I don’t regret it at all. completely worth doing once, even if its a touristy thing to do. Honestly, the Eiffel Tower is even worth visiting in winter.

One of the views from on top of the Eiffel Tower

The reason I felt it was worth it was because it seemed very unique to be on this wrought-iron tower that also happens to be one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Plus, it didn’t take a ton of time so it was a good addition to our Paris itinerary.

However, there are both pros and cons to going up the Eiffel Tower, so below I’ve listed both the reasons for going up it and for not going up it so that you can decide what is best for your trip!

Reasons Why You Should Go Up the Eiffel Tower

If you aren’t sure whether you should go up the Eiffel Tower, here are a few reasons to consider why going up the Eiffel Tower is worth it:

✅ Unique experience to go up an iconic landmark
✅ The Eiffel Tower is a historical and cultural landmark in Paris (built in 1889)
✅ Panoramic views over the city of lights
✅ Have a glass of champagne from the summit
✅ Enjoy a romantic dinner at one of the restaurants on the Eiffel Tower

Reasons Why You Should Not Go Up the Eiffel Tower

🚫 Difficult to get tickets due to popularity
🚫 The tower can close suddenly due to weather or labor strikes
🚫 Can be very crowded
🚫 Considered a touristy thing to do (with lots of pickpockets near the tower)
🚫 Other places in Paris have better views (with the Eiffel Tower in it!)

Is Going Up the Eiffel Tower Worth It at Night?

Going up the Eiffel Tower at night is a completely different experience than during the day. The Eiffel Tower lights up at night, creating a beautiful and romantic ambience. It is definitely worth going up the Eiffel Tower at night to experience the unique and magical atmosphere.

Going Up the Eiffel Tower and Being Scared of Heights

I personally have a fear of heights, which is one reason I questioned if going up the Eiffel Tower would be a good idea for me.

Honestly, for me it was so-so. I was able to handle it but it wasn’t something I’d do again because it does feel high up. However, I was glad I went because I really try to not let a fear of heights hold me back.

One tip I have for those with a fear of heights is to take the elevator. We took the elevator up and the stairs down, and the stairs were slightly terrifying for me because you can see below.

If you have a strong fear of heights, I also recommend only going to the 2nd floor, not the summit.

Alternatives to Going Up the Eiffel Tower for Views of Paris

Honestly, I thought going up the Eiffel Tower was worth it, but I don’t think it is worth it for everyone.

For those that prefer to skip the touristy things or those that want to get a postcard worthy view of Paris then I’d suggest skipping the Eiffel Tower and heading to one the places listed below that have some of the best views of Paris (including some Paris hidden gems)!

☑️ Montparnasse Viewing Deck

Located at 33 Av. du Maine, 75015 Paris, France

View of Paris from the Montparnasse Tower, which is a great alternative to going up the Eiffel Tower

The Montparnasse Tower is located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris. It is much less known than the Eiffel Tower, but provides incredible panoramic views of Paris.

In fact, it is my personal favorite alternative to the Eiffel Tower for views of Paris!

The tower has an outdoor viewing deck on the 56th floor of the building and is also home to the highest rooftop terrace in the city. You can even enjoy a glass of champagne at the 56th floor bar while taking in all the incredible views.

Tickets to the observation deck cost €21 when pre-purchased on their website. The tower is open daily from 9:30am until either 10:30 or 11:30pm (depending on the season).

☑️ Trocadero

Located at Pl. du Trocadéro et du 11 Novembre

This is the best place in Paris to get beautiful photos of the Eiffel Tower. It isn’t high up so you won’t get the city views, but you will get a clear view of the Eiffel.

Tip: Trocadero gets very busy, so I highly recommend going there first thing in the morning if you want a view without the crowds.

This is also a great place to visit at night for a great view of the Eiffel Tower all lit up!

☑️ Rooftop Terrace of Galeries Lafayette

Located at 40 Bd Haussmann, 75009 Paris, France

Another great alternative to going up the Eiffel Tower is to visit the rooftop terrace at the Galeries Lafayette.

The Galeries Lafayette is a grand department store, famed for its Art Nouveau dome and is home to lots of stores, restaurants, and bars. Its definitely worth a visit, and make sure to check out the rooftop terrace for some stunning views of Paris.

☑️ Arc de Triomphe

Located at Pl. Charles de Gaulle, 75008 Paris, France

Arc de Triomphe at night

One of Paris’ other famous landmarks, the Arc de Triomphe is another fantastic alternative to going up the Eiffel Tower. Not only is there some great views from the top of the arc, but this monument also has a historical and cultural significance in Paris which makes it worth visiting.
