Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Vík, Iceland?
Vík is a small village (only around 320 residents), so you don’t need to choose between several different neighborhoods. Instead, you can choose between staying directly in Vík or staying a few minutes outside town along the South Coast.
Staying directly in Vík is best if you want to walk to restaurants and shops, while staying just outside Vík is better for quieter surroundings, dramatic views, Northern Lights viewing, and easy access to Reynisfjara and Dyrhólaey.

If I were choosing where to stay in Vík again, Black Beach Suites would be my first pick.
We personally stayed here during our Iceland road trip, and it ended up being one of my favorite hotels of the trip (read my review here).
The suites are very spacious with a modern design. Each suite has a private terrace and large windows overlooking the surrounding South Iceland landscape.
My favorite part was the view.
The floor-to-ceiling windows look out across the surrounding landscape toward the ocean, and I loved sitting there with my coffee in the morning. It feels much more secluded than staying at a hotel directly in Vík.
If you are visiting September through March, this is the best hotel in Vík to see the Northern Lights, due to its seclusion and large windows.
I 1000% recommend staying at Black Beach Suites.

Hótel Kría is an excellent choice if you want to stay directly in Vík. The modern hotel is located right on Route 1.
A big highlight of this hotel is breakfast is included. Since food is expensive in Iceland, complimentary breakfast is definitely worth it.
Having breakfast included also makes this a convenient and easy place to stay for an overnight stop while driving the Ring Road.
The hotel also has a 24-hour reception, cocktail bar, and an on-site restaurant called Drangar.

3. Vík Apartments – Best for Families or Groups

The location is another major advantage. It’s centrally located in Vik and easily walkable to nearby restaurants and the grocery store.
As a mom, I would definitely stay here if I was traveling with my daughter to Iceland. Having 2 bedrooms and a full kitchen is rare for this area but is perfect for families. Especially for toddlers or younger kids!
I would also book Vík Apartments in you are planning to spend 2-3 nights exploring Iceland’s South Coast. Vík is a perfect base for South Iceland and the apartment style accommodation is ideal for a longer stay.

If convenience is your biggest priority, Hotel Vík í Mýrdal is one of the best places to stay in Vík. The hotel is directly in town and is also walking distance to Vík’s restaurants and shops.
This is super convenient if you don’t want to get in the car again after a long day of driving + exploring.
The rooms are also modern with a luxury feel, making it a comfortable stay in the heart of Vík. Breakfast is also included as an added bonus.
5. Hotel Katla by Keahotels – Best for a Hot Tub + Amenities

It’s about a 10 minute drive east of Vík, so it provides more of a quiet, countryside setting. Its location also makes it a great hotel for the Northern Lights in South Iceland.
Personally, I love hotels with hot tubs in Iceland. Its the perfect way to relax after a day of hiking, driving, and exploring waterfalls along the South Coast.
I would choose Hotel Katla over Black Beach Suites if amenities like a restaurant, fitness center, sauna, and hot tub matter more to you than having an apartment-style room.

The Barn Hostel my pick for travelers looking for a budget-friendly place to stay near Vík. It’s perfect for solo travelers or anyone who wants to save money while traveling Iceland.
This modern hostel has both dormitory (shared) rooms and private rooms. It also has a fully equipped shared kitchen, lounge, bar, free WiFi, and parking.
There aren’t many hostels in this area, so its rare to find such a cheap price for a room. Even the private rooms are affordable, but you need to book early!
The good thing is, even with the low price this is a really nice hostel. It’s very clean, modern, and the bunks have privacy curtains with storage.
The Barn Hostel is actually on the same property as the Black Beach Suites (they share the reception desk). There is also a bar & communal kitchen and living space on site.
If you are looking for affordable accommodation in South Iceland, this is a great choice.

If you don’t mind basic accommodations and shared bathrooms, this is a great budget-friendly option in central Vík.

Yes. Vík is one of the best places to stay in South Iceland, especially if you’re driving the Ring Road between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón.

We’ve stayed in Vík as a base for exploring South Iceland, and on a different trip as an overnight stop before continuing east along the Ring Road.
Driving from Reykjavík, you can visit Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Skógafoss, Kvernufoss, Dyrhólaey, and Reynisfjara before spending the night in Vík. The next day, continue toward Fjaðrárgljúfur, Skaftafell, Diamond Beach, and Jökulsárlón.
It’s a much easier way to explore the South Coast than trying to fit everything into one long day trip from Reykjavík.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Vík?
Most travelers should stay 1-2 nights in Vík, as it is a perfect base for exploring Iceland’s South Coast.
I recommend spending 1-2 night in Vík if you are driving around the entire Ring Road.
If you are only visiting the South Coast, you may want to spend 2-3 nights. This gives you flexibility with the unpredictable Icelandic weather and time to make day trips further to places like Skaftafell or Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach.
What to Consider When Booking a Hotel in Vík
- Book early – Iceland’s South Coast is VERY popular, especially in the summer. Book as early as possible or you may not get a room in Vík.
- Decide Between Convenience vs. Scenery – Stay outside Vík for quieter scenery and better Northern Lights viewing; stay in town for easy access to restaurants, groceries, and gas.
- You Will Need a Rental Car – Even if you stay in Vik, you need a rental car when visiting Iceland’s South Coast as public transportation isn’t available.
