Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Paris at Christmas?

For first-time visitors, the 1st Arrondissement, Saint-Germain, and Le Marais are all excellent places to stay in Paris at Christmas. They are walkable, near lots of sites, and among the safest areas in Paris.

The 1st is best for easy access to the Tuileries Christmas Market, Place Vendôme, the Louvre, and central holiday displays, while Saint-Germain and Le Marais offer more neighborhood charm, cafés, restaurants, and classic Parisian atmosphere.

Stay in the 9th Arrondissement for the Galeries Lafayette Christmas tree and department-store windows, or choose the 8th Arrondissement for the Champs-Élysées lights, luxury shopping, and grand hotels.

The 7th Arrondissement is ideal if you want a quieter, elegant area where you can escape the Christmas crowds while remaining close to the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. For an especially romantic, village-like stay, consider Montmartre.

Where to Stay in Paris at Christmas: 7 Best Areas + Hotels

1. The 1st Arrondissement: Best Overall for a First Christmas in Paris

Staying in the 1st Arrondissement is my top recommendation for travelers that want to be in the center of all of the Christmas festivities.

You will be within walking distance of the Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, Place Vendôme, Palais Royal, the Louvre, La Samaritaine, and many of the decorated shops around Rue Saint-Honoré. You can also walk across the Seine or continue toward the Galeries Lafayette holiday displays.

The Louvre illuminated at night, a highlight in the 1st arrondissement which is also one of the best Paris neighborhoods to stay at Christmas.

This central location is especially helpful during December. Normally, I recommend first time visitors to Paris stay in neighborhoods like Le Marais or St. Germain but during the holidays 1st Arrondissement is perfect for its proximity to Christmas activities. Plus, weather at this time in Paris can get really cold in December, so location is key.

The main disadvantage is price. The 1st is one of the most desirable parts of Paris, so even its relatively affordable hotels can become expensive during peak dates.

Stay in the 1st Arrondissement if: This is your first Christmas in Paris and you want the most convenient base for sightseeing, markets, shopping, and holiday lights.

2. The 9th Arrondissement: Best for Christmas Decorations + Shopping

The 9th Arrondissement is one of the most exciting places to stay during the holiday season.

Some of the Christmas highlights here include Galeries Lafayette which installs a huge themed Christmas tree beneath its stained-glass dome. They also turn the rooftop into an ice skating rink!

The famous Galeries Lafayette Christmas tree display, a must see when visiting Paris for the holidays.

Another highlight is the Printemps animated window displays along Boulevard Haussmann. These are especially popular with families, but they are worth seeing at any age.

You will also be close to Palais Garnier, restaurants, shopping, and several Metro lines. Hotels here can offer better value than comparable properties in the 1st or 8th.

The downside is that the area surrounding the department stores becomes extremely crowded in December. Staying a few streets away gives you convenient access without placing you directly in the busiest pedestrian traffic.

3. Saint-Germain & the 6th Arrondissement: Best for a Cozy, Charming Christmas Stay

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is one of my favorite places to stay in Paris, especially for a romantic trip.

The area has historic cafés, small boutiques, beautiful streets, wine bars, and easy access to the Seine. You can walk across the river toward the Louvre and Tuileries or continue east toward Notre-Dame.

Christmas decorations outside Le Procope in Saint-Germain, Paris

Saint-Germain has traditionally hosted a small Christmas market along Boulevard Saint-Germain, while nearby Le Bon Marché creates its own seasonal windows and decorations. Exact events and dates may change each year.

The 6th is central but feels more intimate than the Champs-Élysées or Boulevard Haussmann. The main drawback is that rooms can be small and prices can be high.

Hôtel de Seine: Best-Located Boutique Hotel in Saint-Germain

⭐ Rating: 8.6/10 I ✅ Book Here
Hôtel de Seine is a charming boutique hotel with the best location in the heart of Saint-Germain. I’ve stayed here and I highly recommend it.

Stay in the 6th Arrondissement if: You want historic cafés, romantic streets, great restaurants, and a central location that feels more intimate than the major shopping districts.

4. Le Marais: Best for Historic Atmosphere & Holiday Charm

Le Marais is an excellent choice for travelers who want a central location with more neighborhood character. It is also a neighborhood filled with history, culture, and many of the hidden gems of Paris.

You can walk to Notre-Dame, Hôtel de Ville, the Seine, Île Saint-Louis, and the shops and restaurants of Le Marais. Seasonal events have previously appeared near Hôtel de Ville and Notre-Dame, although exact Christmas markets can change each year.

The Marais remains lively in the evening, making it a good option for travelers who want plenty of restaurants and cafés close to their hotel.

Hôtel de JoBo: Best Boutique Hotel in Le Marais

⭐ Rating: 9.1/10 I ✅ Book Here
Hôtel de JoBo is a bold four-star boutique hotel for travelers who want a romantic stay filled with personality.

✨ Distinctive interiors: Jewel tones, floral prints, dramatic wallpaper, and vintage details create a warm atmosphere.

Stay in the 4th Arrondissement if: You want historic streets, excellent restaurants, central sightseeing, and plenty to do after dark.

5. The 8th Arrondissement: Best for Christmas Lights + Luxury Shopping

The 8th Arrondissement is the best area to stay near the Champs-Élysées Christmas lights. During the holiday season, the famous avenue is illuminated from Place de la Concorde toward the Arc de Triomphe.

Snow-covered café terrace in Paris during the Christmas season in the 8th arrondissement, one of the best areas to stay in Paris for Christmas.

Nearby Avenue Montaigne and its designer boutiques create their own elaborate decorations, while the Madeleine area provides access to Printemps, Galeries Lafayette, and Place Vendôme.

The 8th is glamorous and convenient, but it can feel less intimate than Saint-Germain or Montmartre. It is also one of the more expensive areas of Paris.

For the best balance of value and location, I would stay near Madeleine rather than directly on the Champs-Élysées.

Hôtel Madeleine Haussmann: Best-Value Hotel in the 8th Arrondissement

⭐ Rating: 8.6/10 I ✅ Book Here
Hôtel Madeleine Haussmann is a stylish three-star boutique hotel in an excellent location near Madeleine Church and Opéra Garnier.

📍 Prime Christmas location: Walk to Place Vendôme, Place de la Concorde, and Rue Saint-Honoré.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Perfect for kids: Option of a Duplex room (sleeps 4) with a loft area for kids!
💶 Good value: Stay in the elegant 8th without paying luxury hotel prices.
✨ Parisian character: Renovated interiors are inspired by classic Haussmann-style apartments.

Stay in the 8th Arrondissement if: You want the Champs-Élysées lights, luxury shopping, and some of Paris’s grandest holiday scenery nearby.

6. The 7th Arrondissement: Best for Eiffel Tower Views

The 7th Arrondissement is not the center of the largest Christmas markets or department-store displays, but it offers something many travelers want even more: the chance to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle close to their hotel.

The Eiffel Tower lit up at night with snow falling, in the 7th arrondissement. If you are looking for where to stay in Paris at Christmas, this is a perfect area.

While many people opt for the more lively or Instagrammable neighborhoods in Paris, I personally love that this can be a quieter part of the city. Especially during the busy holiday season, it is nice to have a hotel away from the crowds.

Plus, its an easy walk to the Eiffel Tower. If it is your first time visiting Paris, it is worth it to go up the Eiffel Tower, even during the winter. In addition to visiting the Eiffel Tower, you can walk to a RER Station and catch the train for a day trip to the Palace of Versailles. While the famous gardens look different at this time of year, Versailles is also worth visiting in winter.

The area being quieter at night can be a benefit for couples and families. However, you may need to hop on the metro to get to further away attractions. Quieter neighborhoods can also be good for longer Paris itineraries.

Hôtel Duquesne Eiffel: Best-Value Eiffel Tower Hotel in the 7th

⭐ Rating: 8.4/10 I ✅ Book Here

🗼 Eiffel Tower views: Select rooms offer direct views of the tower sparkling at night.

Hôtel & Spa Vinci Due: Most Romantic Christmas Hotel in the 7th

⭐ Rating: 8.3/10 I ✅ Book Here
Hôtel & Spa Vinci Due is my personal recommendation for couples seeking a cozy and romantic Christmas hotel in Paris.

It does not have Eiffel Tower views, but it does have a private 1-hour Jacuzzi session each day and is walking distance to Saint-Germain-des-Prés(6th arr.).

🎄 Festive atmosphere: Cozy Christmas decor with a tree & fireplace
✨ Private spa experience: Option to schedule a 1 hour time slot in the private jacuzzi spa, which is perfect for warming up on cold days.
📍 Safe, walkable location: Musée d’Orsay, the Seine, and Saint-Germain are nearby; we walked to dinner in the 6th in about 10 minutes.
❤️ Boutique stay: With only 15 rooms, the hotel feels quiet, romantic, and personal.
⚠️ Note: The hotel does not have Eiffel Tower views.

Stay in the 7th Arrondissement if: Seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle is a priority and you prefer a peaceful, elegant neighborhood.

7. Montmartre: Romantic & Charming

Montmartre (18th Arrondissement) is one of the most romantic places to stay in Paris at Christmas.

Sacré-Cœur, the famous church in Montmartre.

Its cobblestone streets, traditional cafés, glowing shopfronts, artists’ squares, and views across Paris already feel storybook-like. During December, the neighborhood’s cozy interiors and village atmosphere feel especially festive.

Near Montmartre you will find the famous cabaret show Moulin Rouge. I highly recommend going to a show at Moulin Rouge or La Nouvelle Eve, and making a dinner reservation beforehand at the popular Pink Mama restaurant.

Moulin Rouge decorated with Christmas trees and festive lights at night in Paris

However, Montmartre is not the most convenient base for a packed first-time itinerary. You will need to use the Metro or take taxis to reach everywhere else in Paris. The hills and stairs can also be difficult with a stroller or limited mobility, so I don’t really recommend it for families (small kids or elderly) or for first-time visitors.

I do think its a great option for couples or those who have been to Paris before and want to say somewhere with lots of historic charm during the holidays.

Hôtel Monsieur Aristide: Most Romantic Christmas Hotel in Montmartre

⭐ Rating: 8.7/10 I ✅ Book Here
Hôtel Monsieur Aristide is a stylish four-star boutique hotel perfect for a romantic Christmas stay in Montmartre.

🎄 Festive winter experience: The covered terrace transforms into a cozy alpine-style chalet during the winter season.
✨ Bohemian interiors: Vintage furniture, record players, rich fabrics, and artistic details reflect Montmartre’s character.
📍 Excellent location: Close to the Wall of Love, Moulin Rouge, and local cafés.
🍷 Great for evenings in: The hotel has a restaurant, cocktail bar, and covered terrace.

Stay in Montmartre if: You care more about charm, romance, and neighborhood atmosphere than being within walking distance of every major Paris attraction.

What to Look for in a Paris Christmas Hotel

Location matters even more in December than it does during warmer months. You may be walking at night in cold or rainy weather, so consider how easily you can return after seeing the decorations.

Before booking, check:

  • Distance from a Metro station
  • Walking distance to evening attractions
  • Room size and maximum occupancy
  • Elevator access
  • Family-room configuration
  • Flexible cancellation policies
  • Holiday restaurant opening hours

Most Paris hotels do decorate for Christmas, but decorations can change from one year to the next. A boutique hotel that displayed a tree and garlands during one season may choose a different theme the following year.

FAQs: Where to Stay in Paris for the Holidays

Do Paris hotels decorate for Christmas?

Yes! Many Paris hotels decorate for Christmas. 5 star luxury hotels like The Ritz will go all out with Christmas decor, however even smaller boutique hotels will typically have a Christmas tree, cozy fireplace, and some holiday decor.

Should I stay near a Paris Christmas market?

There are several Christmas markets in Paris, and most are smaller than other Christmas market destinations. You don’t need to stay next to the Christmas Market, especially if you are within a 10-15 minute walk.

Is it worth staying near the Champs-Élysées at Christmas?

Staying near the Champs-Élysées at Christmas is ideal for festive lights, luxury shopping, and easy evening sightseeing. However, the area can be crowded and expensive. Madeleine offers convenient access to the avenue, Place Vendôme, and major department stores without staying directly on the Champs-Élysées. For a quieter or more romantic atmosphere, consider Saint-Germain or Le Marais instead during your trip.

Are there affordable hotels in Paris at Christmas?

Yes, but “affordable” is relative in central Paris during December. Hôtel de Seine, Hôtel Louvre Sainte-Anne, Hôtel Madeleine Haussmann, Hôtel Duquesne Eiffel, Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais, and Le Relais Montmartre are among the better-value options in desirable neighborhoods. Rates can rise significantly during Christmas week and New Year’s Eve.

Where should families stay in Paris at Christmas?

The 9th Arrondissement is a strong choice for families because it is close to the department-store windows and has several hotels with larger family rooms. Hôtel 34B – Astotel offers a configuration that can accommodate up to five guests.
Hôtel Molière in the 1st is a more upscale alternative with a 47-square-meter Family Suite for three or four people.

Where should couples stay in Paris at Christmas?

Saint-Germain, the 7th Arrondissement, and Montmartre are the most romantic choices.
Hôtel & Spa Vinci Due is my top couples’ pick because of its intimate size, spa, lobby fireplace, and the Christmas decorations I experienced during my stay.

Stay in the 8th for luxury hotels and shopping, or the quieter 7th for easy access to the Eiffel Tower. For a more romantic atmosphere, consider Saint-Germain, Le Marais, or Montmartre.
