I recently visited Split and was pleasantly surprised by how historic & charming it was. The Old Town was so unique with many things to do, which is why I think it is the best area to stay in Split.

However, there are also several other great neighborhoods in Split so whether you are looking for a beach vibe, tranquil atmosphere, or charming local neighborhood, there is sure to be a perfect option for your trip.

Below, I’ve detailed the 5 best areas to stay in Split, plus included some hotel recommendations for each neighborhood so that you can find the perfect place to stay for your trip to Split.

1. Old Town – Where to Stay in Split for First Time Visitors

If you are looking for where to stay in Split as a first-time visitor, then I highly recommend staying in Old Town. Split’s Old Town is a pedestrian-only area that is incredibly historic and charming, and is in the center of everything.

The entire Old Town encompasses the ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, which was built at the end of the 3rd century by the Roman Emperor Diocletian.

Today, the Old Town consists of historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and a variety of bars, restaurants and shops. (Plus, it was a major filming site for the Game of Thrones series!)

Additionally, right outside the Old Town you’ll find the beautiful Split Riva Promenade which runs along the Adriatic Sea. Not only is this a great place to walk around, but it makes it easy to take day trips to places like Hvar.
